Seagrass comes from a flowering plant that grows underwater in the sea. It’s usually found in sandy or silty soil, although it sometimes grows right on top of rocks. Because it grows in large groups, it tends to resemble a fields of wheat or tall grass, which is how it came be called “seagrass.”

As a flowering plant, seagrass is unique in that it grows and pollinates under water. So why do we use this product in our home and on our floors? Because of synthetic area rugs and carpets that commonly off-gas toxic, harmful VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) into the air, many of us have become more aware and make conscience decisions regarding which products we chose to put in our homes. These VOC’s can be emitted from both the synthetic fibers that make up the rug pile and the synthetic glues used in the backing. In which, none of us want our families to breathe. VOC’s can cause a multitude of unpleasant symptoms including eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea and dizziness. Whether one suffers from allergies, has a sensitive respiratory system or not—choosing a natural fiber area rug which does not off-gas is a positive choice that helps create a healthier environment in your home.

Seagrass is also a natural flame-repellant. With the neutral colors that range from beige to light brown to a greenish hue, these rugs tie in beautifully with any décor. Seagrass rugs are among the most affordable types of natural flooring and yet they make great accent pieces in any room with their naturally smooth texture and alluring luster. The dining area is another ideal place for a low-maintenance seagrass rug. These rugs are easy to clean; all that’s required is vacuuming and warm, soapy water.
