An area rug on a hard surface is a much more healthy choice. You can clean underneath your rug. You can even turn the rug over and vacuum the back of your rug. An area rug can be sent to a professional rug cleaner where it will be washed and rinsed clean. On most area rugs you can use a Hoover or Bissell portable cleaner to clean the pile and back of the rug.
